Matty Healy gave a North East fundraiser for young performers a surprise boost by revealing The 1975’s long-awaited new album is almost complete.

He made the announcement in a video with his father, Sunday for Sammy chair Tim Healy, during the charity event in North Shields.

The 9075, a tribute band who recently performed with Healy at a private event in Malibu, headlined the fundraiser at Salt Market Social on the Fish Quay.

Karen Goldfinch, of Sunday for Sammy, said: "We’re committed to providing young creative talent with valuable opportunities both onstage and behind the scenes. It’s something we’re all passionate about in the trust.

"Alongside our young talent on stage, students from Gateshead College and the newly formed Tyneside Cinema Talent Unit gained first-hand experience of working on a real event.

"Everyone involved played an important part and was fantastic to work with."

The sold-out event, which held 450 people, raised funds for the Sunday for Sammy Trust, supporting emerging talent across the North East.

The bill included North Shields singer-songwriter Chris Forbes, multi-instrumentalist Aydie Gargett, who appeared on Channel 4’s The Piano, and grassroots music champion Joe Allan.

Olivier Award-winning actress Jill Halfpenny also appeared, while singer and comedian Kelly Rickard hosted and performed.

Other guests included saxophonist Niall Armstrong, bassist Mark Appleby, drummer Michael Mather and Low Lights Tavern managing director Lyndon Philliskirk.

Recent Sunday for Sammy grantees also performed, winning praise for their versions of The 1975’s songs.

Video messages came from Tim Healy, Matty Healy and Matty’s mother, actress Denise Welch, who recorded hers on the set of the new Netflix sitcom Marbles.

Rising North East band Leopard Print also supported the event.

The 9075 became involved with the trust after regularly visiting its office above North Shields’ Low Lights Tavern. Earlier this year, Louis Healy invited the band to perform at a private stag event in Malibu for Matty Healy.

During the Malibu show, Matty Healy joined the band on stage, making headlines around the world.

The night before the fundraiser, 9075 frontman Carlo played an acoustic set at the Low Lights Tavern music room, where Sam Fender was spotted by his soon-to-be manager.

Paul Irwin, the event producer, said: "In true Sunday for Sammy tradition, we wanted to put on a show packed with surprises.

"It was great fun having The 9075 share the stage with established stars alongside our exceptional new Sammy grantees."

The charity redistributes the money it raises as grants for young North East creative talent.

The 9075 have called their involvement with the trust “a genuine honour”, praising its longstanding connection with the Healy family and support for the next generation of North East talent.
