Five rare baby cows born at Temple Newsam Home Farm

The new babies are five of only 150 of the breed in the UK

Five rare baby cows have been born at Temple Newsam's Home Farm.

The adorable babies were born at Home Farm in Temple Newsam and are already settling in well. The five are Vaynol Cows, which trace their origin to North Wales in the 19th Century, and which are categorised as 'priority' by the Rare Breed Survival Trust (RBST).

There has been a herd of Vaynol Cows at Temple Newsam in Leeds since the 1980s, and they come from the original herd. Richard Aldis, farm manager at Temple Newsam, said: "We’re so thrilled to have welcomed these little ones to the farm.

"The team here works hard to protect these rare breeds that the farm is home to and it’s always wonderful when we can successfully grow the herd. The calves are settling in well and we’re just thinking about names for them."

Vaynol Cows can now be found at five locations across the UK, and Temple Newsam is now home to one one bull, 14 breeding cows, five heifers, and the new calves. The breed's survival is partially thanks to the work done at Temple Newsam in the 1980s once the herd arrived, which has proved vital to RBST efforts.

Temple Newsam is one of the largest rare breed farms in Europe, with every breed there native to the UK. This includes white faced woodland sheep, middle white pigs, and Bagot goats.

Councillor James Gibson, Leeds City Council’s executive member for environment, said: "It’s wonderful to hear the news about these rare little calves being born, it is truly a testament to the important work that is done by the team at Temple Newsam’s Home Farm in preserving these breeds for future generations.

"There is so much for visitors to enjoy at the estate. Alongside the farm and its wonderful animals, people can explore the magnificent Temple Newsam House, enjoy the new bike park, and visit the recently opened play barn. It really is a fantastic day out for the whole family."
