Wetherby celebrates outstanding success at Yorkshire in Bloom Awards

An army of volunteers were thanked for their efforts in helping Wetherby to a bunch of prestigious awards at the Yorkshire in Bloom contest.

Wetherby in Bloom volunteers' award-winning efforts are celebrated at a special event at the Town Hall.

Wetherby Town Council hosted a special thank you event at the Town Hall on Thursday to celebrate the success of achieving five Gold Roses, best entry in West Yorkshire and a discretionary award.

Councillor Connor Mulhall, Mayor of Wetherby, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Wetherby and a wonderful recognition of the hard work undertaken by so many people across our town.

“From our dedicated volunteers and community groups to Living Potential Care Farm and everyone who plants, tends, cleans and cares for Wetherby, this success belongs to the whole community.”

Wetherby in Bloom thanks the Knitting Ninjas for their contribution to the award-winning effort.

Competing in the Local and Parish Councils category, Wetherby was awarded the maximum possible five Gold Roses, recognising the hard work, community spirit and dedication that goes into keeping the town looking beautiful throughout the year.

The town was also presented with the Yorkshire Rose Discretionary Special Floral Award, celebrating the impressive floral displays that can be found throughout Wetherby.

This year, a new and exciting collaboration between Wetherby Town Council and Living Potential Care Farm gave members of the organisation the responsibility for planting and maintaining one of the town’s show gardens, The Garden of Rest.

Town Clerk Dianne Rickaby said: “Living Potential Care Farm is a charitable organisation incorporating a local farm and community garden, at which a variety of workshops and activities are provided for disabled members, dementia groups and people with neurodiverse needs.

“Members have worked hard to plant, tend and care for the Garden of Rest, creating a beautiful display for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Wetherby’s success is hailed a community effort, with numerous volunteer groups and organisations contributing time and creativity.

Diane added: “Wetherby in Bloom plays a huge part in transforming the town each year, filling the streets with beautiful hanging baskets and planters.

“Their converted milk float and watering tractor are popular sights around town with the volunteers keeping the displays well-watered along with helping to keep the town clean and looking its best.”

Adding a splash of creativity to the town are the talented knitting groups Knitting Ninjas and Knitwits and Hookers, whose amazing knitted displays have become a much-loved feature of Wetherby and bring colour, humour and personality to the town.

The Litter Free Wetherby volunteers, affectionately known locally as the Wetherby Wombles, also make an enormous contribution.

Throughout the year, these dedicated volunteers spend countless hours litter picking across the town, helping to keep Wetherby clean, welcoming and free from litter.

Diane added: “Wetherby Town Council would like to extend a huge thank you to every volunteer, group, organisation and individual who has contributed.

“The five Gold Roses and additional awards are a reflection of the collective effort and pride that people have in their town.”

The clerk added that the town council played a significant role in the success, maintaining numerous public green spaces and amenities.

“The maintenance of these areas, alongside improvements to playgrounds and public amenities, formed an important part of Wetherby’s overall Yorkshire in Bloom entry,” said Diane.

As West Yorkshire’s winning town, Wetherby will now go forward to next year’s competition to compete for the title of Champion of Yorkshire.

Wetherby will be joined by Driffield representing East Yorkshire, Dunnington representing North Yorkshire, and Harthill with Woodall representing South Yorkshire.
