An arsonist faces a bill of more than £880 for sending a city centre bin up in flames.

Andrew Nelson, 37, set fire to a business waste bin belonging to Hotel Indigo in Walmgate on June 2, the court heard.

Police bailed him to appear before the court for his first hearing on August 17 and he failed to do so. A warrant was signed for his arrest.

Nelson, of Carter Avenue, Tang Hall, did appear before the court on August 25 when he pleaded guilty to setting fire to a business waste bin belonging to Hotel Indigo and failure to attend court.

The case was adjourned while probation officers prepared a report on him.

On his return to court, he was given a 12-month community order with six months' alcohol rehabilitative treatment and ordered to do 18 days' rehabilitative activities.

He must pay the hotel £886 compensation.
