Railway staff have swapped platforms for the seafront, collecting bags of litter during a beach clean.

TransPennine Express (TPE) employees took part in the Great British Beach Clean on Scarborough’s North Bay, collecting six bags of discarded items including food packaging, plastic fragments, cigarette butts and even half a bicycle.

The annual event, organised by The Marine Conservation Society, is one of the largest marine citizen science activities of its kind in the UK.

All items collected were recorded and will contribute to UK-wide data on the state of our beaches.

Steve Gilder, environment delivery lead at TPE, said: "We operate Scarborough station, close to some wonderful beaches, as well as transporting people to our various coastal destinations, so we wanted to make a difference for our local community by taking part in the Great British Beach Clean.

"I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered and spent the day with us – just by giving up a few hours, our actions will contribute to making our beaches cleaner and safer for us all to enjoy.

"At TPE we are committed to creating a better environment for the communities we serve."

TPE aims to lead and enable sustainable tourism and transport across the North of England and into Scotland via its commitments to customers and sustainability.

The company is owned by DfT Operator (DfTO), formerly known as DOHL, which took over the running of TPE services on May 28, 2023.

DfTO works with train operators and Network Rail to lay the foundations for Great British Railways (GBR) - working together to deliver a better railway for everyone in Britain.

Ahead of the establishment of GBR in 2027, DfTO is responsible for bringing privately operated passenger services into public ownership, ensuring stability, accountability and continuity for customers and taxpayers.
