A GROUP of young people have completed a two-year police cadet programme.

The West Yorkshire Police Cadets from Leeds West finished the programme on September 29, which began in September 2024 with around 20 cadets aged 13 to 15 from around five high schools across the area.

PC Sarah Berrell, who supported the group, said: "I’m incredibly proud of all of our West Yorkshire Police cadets and how far they have come.

"They have worked so hard, challenged themselves and grown in confidence along the way."

Cadets met weekly during term time and were supported by eight dedicated leaders.

In their first year, they learned about policing roles and officer responsibilities while working toward their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

All cadets completed the award in September 2025, with 11 continuing into a second year to pursue the Silver award.

The group volunteered in the community, including taking part in test purchasing operations and supporting the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon.

They also helped at events such as Pudsey Remembrance Day and the Force Awards.

PC Berrell said: "The cadet programme is such a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn new skills, build confidence, make new friends and get involved in their community."
