Inside viral £110k Middlesbrough home with toilet in kitchen and link to artist

A Middlesbrough home attracting attention for its kitchen toilet may once have belonged to acclaimed Teesside artist Glynn Porteous.

A Middlesbrough house has caught the attention of a property influencer after a toilet was spotted sitting in the middle of the kitchen.

Bushrod - a creator known for showcasing Britain’s most eye-catching and unconventional properties on his Housing Horrors account - shared the listing on Facebook and Instagram last month.

The three-bedroom terraced house on Clive Road in Middlesbrough is on the market for £110,000 and is described by estate agents Purple Bricks as full of character and potential.

But one image in the listing caught the Housing Horrors creator’s attention.

Photos of the property appear to show a toilet installed directly within the kitchen area.

He said: "Upon first glance, it looks like any other normal property.

"But then you get to the other side of the room, and there is a toilet inside the kitchen.

"The only thing that's actually dividing you in the kitchen, and someone else on the toilet, is this little divider."

The unusual layout quickly became a talking point among locals and Housing Horrors fans further afield.

In the video, Bushrod asked: "I'd love to know - does everyone in Middlesbrough live like this?

Despite the unusual feature, the house is being marketed as a substantial family home in a desirable location.

The listing says the bay-fronted terrace has three reception rooms, three bedrooms, a family bathroom and a loft room across three floors, while retaining many original period features.

Purple Bricks says the house is "much larger than its external appearance would suggest" and offers buyers the chance to put their own stamp on a home already full of character.

The video also shows artwork and distinctive décor throughout the property, with speculation in the comment section that the house once belonged to a Teesside artist and his wife, with his name seen printed above the door.

On Facebook, one user commented: "There is something written on the window above the front door about an artist having lived there.

"I guess that explains the interesting artwork in the bathroom and on the stairs!"

Another said: "It was a local artist's house. His wife was very old before passing away - maybe that’s why the toilet was downstairs.

"This house used to be incredible."

The glass panel above the front door features the name "Glynn Porteous" - the highly regarded Teesside painter and illustrator who died in 2003 - suggesting the property may once have been his home.

Looking through the rest of the pictures, Bushrod added: "The rest of the property is actually quite interesting, to be honest, because they've got all of this sort of weird, medieval slash Egyptian slash antique furniture designs on the bathroom wall.

"And there's actually a fake door painted below the stairs, and on the other side is a mural of someone holding a fake bannister."

While the toilet may not appeal to every buyer, it has attracted plenty of attention online and sets the house apart from the standard Middlesbrough family home.

For some buyers, the kitchen toilet may be a deal-breaker; for others, it may be just another quirk in a property packed with potential.
