Beloved North East music venue set for major revamp with £334,000 funding boost

The Newcastle music venue hopes its £334,000 upgrade will attract more artists, audiences and events while cutting emissions.

A major upgrade project is set to transform one of Newcastle’s best-loved music venues.

The Cluny, based in Ouseburn, has secured £334,000 from the Government’s Arts Everywhere Fund to deliver a programme of sustainability and accessibility improvements.

The funding will support enhancements at both of its venues, improve the experience for audiences and performers, and set the venue on a path to long-term decarbonisation.

Ross Lewis, production manager at The Cluny, said: "This funding is transformational for The Cluny.

"It will allow us to make meaningful improvements to accessibility in both our venues while taking important steps towards reducing our carbon footprint.

"As an independent venue, making changes at this scale would be impossible without this level of support, and we're proud that the work we're doing reflects our commitment to being both inclusive and environmentally responsible.

"The appointment of Savills means we can now move forward with confidence, supported by a team that understands both the opportunities and challenges of the project and shares our ambition for the venue's future."

Following a competitive tender process, Savills’ architecture and building surveying team in Newcastle has been appointed to manage the project.

Savills will design and oversee the delivery of the works, which are expected to begin in January and last around 13 to 14 months.

Improvements will focus on increasing accessibility, operational efficiency, and environmental performance.

The project aims to create a more welcoming space for all visitors, optimise the use of the venue, and support increased capacity.

The Cluny hopes the changes will help attract a wider range of artists and events.

The investment is also expected to boost the venue’s long-term financial sustainability, support local jobs, and offer opportunities for small businesses in the area to contribute to the project.

Mark Coulter, associate director in Savills’ architecture and building surveying team, said: "We're delighted to have been appointed to deliver this exciting project for The Cluny."

"The investment will provide an opportunity to improve accessibility, enhance the experience for audiences and artists, increase the flexibility and efficiency of the venue, and reduce its environmental impact.

"The Cluny plays a hugely important role in the cultural life of Newcastle and the wider North East.

"Through this programme of works, we will help create a more accessible, sustainable and resilient venue that can continue to support live music, attract new audiences and deliver lasting benefits for the local community and economy."
