A family-run garden centre with roots stretching back to the 19th century is winning praise from customers, earning an impressive 4.7-star rating from more than 300 Google reviews.
W Braithwaite & Sons in Leeming Bar has won loyal customers with its wide plant range, expert staff and traditional nursery values.
The business traces its history back to the 1850s, when the Braithwaite family began running a market garden in the village.
The small flower and vegetable grower has grown into one of the North’s best-known independent garden centres.
The family business was officially established in 1890 and is now one of the last traditional working nurseries in the region.
Across generations, the nursery has weathered two world wars, changing gardening fashions, plant diseases and economic downturns.
The garden centre grows much of its own stock on site, including fruit and ornamental trees, shrubs, bedding plants and herbaceous varieties.
The business says growing its own plants helps it maintain quality while keeping prices competitive.
It also sells gardening essentials including tools, seeds, compost, fertilisers, gravel, outdoor pots and houseplants.
One customer left a five-star review and said: "The selection of good quality healthy plants was fantastic.
"If you compare prices to other local garden centres it really is great value for money.
"The gentleman serving was very friendly.
"A must visit for any gardener to this hidden gem."
Bloom, a coffee shop converted from a former bungalow, is the garden centre’s latest addition.
The café serves food, drinks and seasonal specials, with indoor and outdoor seating.
One diner left a review and said: "What a fantastic little place, stylishly decorated, lovely crockery, comfy seats and tables nicely spread out.
"Lots of attention to detail too.
"We had breakfast here a couple of weeks ago, two gorgeous sausage bagels with hash browns and fried eggs.
"Delicious and makes a change to a full English which you can’t always manage. Some lovely other breakfast options as well.
"Service was efficient and friendly, cheese scones were fantastic too.
"Well done Braithwaites, you have done a wonderful job and wishing you much success."
The nursery’s history is inseparable from the Braithwaite family.
Born in 1896, Wilfred Braithwaite developed his passion for horticulture at Gibson’s Nursery in Leeming Bar before serving with the Green Howards in the First World War.
Wounded at the Battle of the Somme, he returned home and eventually took over the family market garden, building a national reputation for award-winning Scabiosa plants.
His son David expanded into rose growing, while later generations added tree production, new greenhouses and modern growing techniques.
