Passengers face a nine-day Metro closure in the North East while vital track and overhead-line equipment is replaced.

The Yellow Line between St James and Monkseaton will be closed from Saturday, October 24, to Sunday, November 1.

Services will resume on Monday, November 2.

Paul Welford, major projects director at Nexus, said: "This full programme of works is part of our major ongoing investment in Metro infrastructure.

"We will be replacing track, overhead line equipment and other vital pieces of infrastructure, to increase reliability and ensure that we have a functional Metro system for many years to come.

"There is no good time to close a line, and we always try to minimise disruption to as many customers as possible.

"Our plans always consider school holidays, to ensure the least possible disruption to customers.

"By scheduling these works during half term, we can avoid impacting busier commutes, and less congestion on the roads should speed up alternative travel times on replacement buses.

"Customers are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time to make their journeys through the affected area.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.

"We are committed to carefully planning these closures throughout the year to maximise works and minimise repeated disruption in the same area in the future."

The closure will allow Nexus to replace track, overhead lines and critical junctions in east Newcastle.

Workers will install 1,500 metres of new rail between Walkergate and Wallsend, renew the track beds and replace timber sleepers.

Workers will also upgrade overhead-line and switching equipment in North Tyneside.

The work is part of the Metro Asset Renewal Programme, a long-term plan to modernise the network and improve reliability.

Nexus will concentrate several upgrades in the same closure under its “Fixed Area Planning” approach, reducing future disruption nearby.

The project will also cover infrastructure maintenance, station upgrades, lineside estate work and structural inspections.

Work will continue 24 hours a day throughout the closure.

Replacement buses will run throughout the closure, stopping at or near every affected station.

Nexus expects lighter traffic during half term to help replacement buses run smoothly.

Passengers should plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

"Lineside residents whose homes or businesses are close to the Metro lines may see track and lineside estate works right along the affected route, including rail vehicles and machinery."

The closure also lets Nexus carry out station upgrades and other critical work without disrupting normal services.

Passengers can get travel updates on the Pop App or Metro’s official X page, @My_Metro.
