A man told he was too overweight for a life-saving liver transplant has lost 8st and been given a second chance at life.
Stephen Spencer, 61, from Consett, was diagnosed with cancer in one liver lobe and placed on the transplant waiting list before doctors delivered devastating news.
At 24st 4lb, he was told he had to lose weight before doctors would consider him for the life-saving surgery.
Having already been forced to retire through ill health, Mr Spencer knew he had little choice but to make a dramatic change.

"Ill health and the threat of death," he said, explaining what motivated him to begin his weight-loss journey.
With the support of his wife, Kris, he joined a Slimming World group in Consett and set out to reach the target that would make him eligible for a transplant.
Mr Spencer was not trying to improve his appearance or fitness - he was fighting for his life.
Every pound he lost brought him one step closer to receiving the operation he desperately needed.
The results were immediate.
He lost 20lb in his first week and went on to shed a remarkable 8st, reducing his weight from 24st 4lb to 16st 4lb.
His weight loss ultimately allowed him to undergo the transplant, which he received two years ago.
The surgery transformed his future.
Now Mr Spencer has put his illness behind him and embraced an active lifestyle.

He goes to the gym every day, has taken up archery and hopes one day to represent Great Britain at the Transplant Games.
Food Optimising has also become a regular part of family life, with healthy eating helping him maintain his weight loss and protect his health.
"I follow the plan exactly. I love the recipes and the Iceland meals are fab," he said.
Mr Spencer also paid tribute to Slimming World consultant Dawn, who helped support him throughout his journey.
