North Yorkshire artists open studios to visitors for a winter weekend event

Winter Open Studios returns across North Yorkshire, with artists’ studios, makers and Christmas gifts open to visitors

Studios, workshops and artists’ retreats across North Yorkshire will open their doors this winter as the countywide arts event returns.

Winter Open Studios will run on Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8.

The event gives visitors a rare look inside artists’ and makers’ workplaces.

Visitors can explore studios, meet artists and browse artwork for sale.

Garth Bayley, project manager at North Yorkshire Open Studios (NYOS), said: "Winter Open Studios is about connecting people with the people behind the art.

"There’s something incredibly special about buying a Christmas gift directly from the person who made it, right in the space where it was created.

"This weekend is a fantastic opportunity to explore our stunning region, meet incredibly talented makers and find truly unique pieces that you won’t see anywhere else."

Artist-run collective North Yorkshire Open Studios (NYOS) is staging the event, which features a wide range of styles and media.

Venues include a converted sawmill in the Yorkshire Dales and a courtyard garden studio.

Winter Open Studios will complete NYOS’s 2026 programme, celebrating the region’s creative talent.

Scarborough textile artist Lisa Skelton is among those taking part.

Ms Skelton uses fabric and embroidery to depict birds, wildlife and pets in natural settings.

Lothersdale artist Keith Dickinson creates linoprints and Japanese woodcuts inspired by British architecture and landscapes.

Harrogate artist Frances Tabbernor paints nature-inspired scenes featuring water and sky.

Her work has appeared on the BBC programme The Great British Sewing Bee.

Chapel Haddlesey artist Elise Bikker explores the humanisation of machines in her work.

She questions the way society teaches machines to simulate empathy and love while dismissing human relationships formed through screens as “unreal.”
