A key North East road is set to close for several months as essential utility works are carried out, according to a public notice.

Sections of the A182 Washington Highway, in the Mount Pleasant area, are to be temporarily shut for pipe installation works.

The closure will come into effect from October 12, after Sunderland City Council made the order on September 23, under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The council said the closure is expected to last around four months, though the order allows for a maximum of 18 months if necessary.

The affected sections include the entire length of the westbound off slip and on slip at Mount Pleasant Interchange, as well as a section of Station Road from the Station Road roundabout to its western extent.

All vehicles will be prohibited from these roads until the works are completed, except for those involved in the works and emergency service vehicles on duty attending an emergency call.
