WORKERS arriving for early shifts in a part of the city centre of York this morning (Thursday, October 1) were met with a police cordon.
As reported by The Press, police have been guarding entrances to a walkway close to the Coppergate Centre, and the City of York Council-run car park is closed.
As businesses began to open their doors this morning, many workers said they had not been aware of the cordon, which is offset from the main staff entrances and runs from Piccadilly to Castle Car Park.
A Primark employee who began her shift at 5.45am said she noticed the police tape as she came into work.
Staff at Sainsbury’s Local in Piccadilly noticed the tape was already in place when they began work, while workers at the Fenwick department store delivery entrance on Coppergate became aware of the cordon around 8.30am.
Scaffolders outside Pavement Vaults said they started work at 7am and were not immediately aware of anything happening nearby, and a window cleaner working on Pavers in Coppergate around the same time had not seen or heard anything either.
The Press has contacted North Yorkshire Police.
