A MEETING has been held today (Wednesday) to discuss potential steps to improve access while roadworks are carried out in a North Yorkshire town.

Cllr Keane Duncan today met with Northern Gas Network’s site manager to discuss ways to improve the ongoing road closures for residents in Norton.

Welham Road is currently one-way from the level crossing with motorists wanting to access Malton facing an eight-mile diversion via Langton.

Cllr Duncan said: "A temporary way on Bazeley’s Lane, for cars, not HGVs, to manage extra traffic safely is one suggestion being considered.

"This will be discussed again at a meeting with North Yorkshire Council on Thursday morning. Welham Road remains closed northbound (towards the level crossing) from Springfield Garth. It is expected that the closure will be in place for two weeks.

"There have been cases today of vehicles travelling through the no entry signs and into the path of oncoming vehicles. Please follow the signs and drive carefully. Traffic management personnel are monitoring the closure each day and directing vehicles to turnaround.

"The official diversion to access Malton/Norton remains via Langton - an eight-mile trip. However, as mentioned, Bazeley’s Lane is open meaning there is extra traffic now using this single track route.

"Again, please drive carefully here."

"You can continue to access Welham Road from the level crossing/Church Street. Lidl can be accessed from the level crossing/Church Street. You can leave Lidl via both Welham Road and St Nicholas Street, but this street continues to be closed one way from the Langton Road direction.

"Be aware, you can only turn left up Welham Road when exiting BP/M&S."

Cllr Duncan said: “It is important these works are managed so residents can continue to access their homes, shops and key services without unreasonable or unnecessary disruption. It is also important that traffic is managed safely.

“The discussions with NGN and North Yorkshire Council today have been positive. I hope that additional steps can soon be introduced to improve this situation for residents. I will continue to make suggestions, constructively challenge decision makers and keep residents informed.”
