A PLANNED opening of a fast food restaurant in York city centre is set to be delayed.

Popeyes has announced that its opening, planned for later this week, will now be pushed back until 11am on October 9 due a 'delay in final preparations'.

Despite this, the fried chicken giant was keen to stress that all opening day celebrations were still set to go ahead with the first three people in the queue to win free chicken sandwiches for a year.

The first 50 customers will also get exclusive Popeyes UK merchandise and the first 100 will receive a free chicken sandwich on opening day.

The new restaurant has created 70 jobs and will offer both dine-in and takeaway services.

A spokesperson for Popeyes UK, said: "We're disappointed to postpone the launch by a week and apologise for any inconvenience caused to readers who were planning to attend.

"However, we're excited to bring our famous Louisiana chicken to York very soon and will confirm once the new opening date is finalised."

The opening is expected to draw large crowds, with the chain advising fried chicken fans to arrive early to avoid missing out on giveaways as previous openings have attracted people who camped overnight to attend.

The York restaurant will be open from 11am on launch day, giving fans the chance to try the chain’s famous New Orleans flavours for the first time in the city.
