A man who previously denied offences of burglary and theft changed pleas on the day he was to have gone on trial.

William Patton will now be sentenced next month after making his plea changes when the case was called on at Durham Crown Court, on Monday (September 28).

The offences include burglary of a house in Rowan Drive, Shildon, from where a set of car keys were stolen, on January 29 this year.

He also admitted theft of an MG ZS car and the attempted theft of a pedal cycle, both on the same day.

Patton also admitted burglary with intent to steal from a property in Arthur Terrace, Bishop Auckland, on March 5, and common assault of an emergency worker, a female police officer, on March 10.

Judge Timothy Clayson fixed a sentencing date of October 30 at the court.

He remanded the 33-year-old defendant, of Dent Street, Shildon, to remain in custody pending preparation of a background Probation Service report on Patton.
