A new literature festival will bring authors, poets and readers together in the North East for talks, workshops and competitions.

The first Hartlepool Headland Literature Festival will take place on Saturday, October 3.

Festival director and Hartlepool-born historical fiction writer SJ Martin said: "There are lots of young, talented, budding authors and poets out there."

The festival will fill St Helen’s Masonic Hall on Regent Street with a full day of events for readers and writers of all ages.

The programme includes author talks, workshops, book signings and a creative writing competition for schoolchildren.

A spokesperson for the festival said: "There will be something for everyone: readers of all ages, writers, events for budding authors and much more, with the Headland FolkFest events taking place around it on the Headland."

The line-up includes broadcaster and author Alan Wright, bestselling author Griff Hosker, Gibraltarian poet Gabriel Moreno and RT Taylor.

Alan Wright, who is appearing at the festival, has also chaired public debates on regional issues, including a 2003 discussion about an elected North-East assembly.
