The work has closed a section of the left-hand lane, leading onto Blossom Street and The Mount.

It caused long queues at around 6pm this evening, as bus drivers and motorists attempted to navigate around the closure.

An eye-witness said: "Despite the necessity of the works, I was frustrated as it took me the double the time to get home and this news wasn't shared with me in advance.

"Bus drivers were struggling to get around the closure.

"It could have been better managed."

Traffic is being diverted along Dalton Terrace.

The Press has reached out to City of York Council for comment.
