TWO major streets in York city centre are currently closed to traffic as repairs on the sewers are underway.

Colliergate and King’s Square are currently shut to traffic as a result of water mains work which began on Monday (September 28) and are set to continue until later this week.

This follows work in the area earlier this year and in 2025 to repair the sewer below the popular city centre square, meaning that the area was closed to cars.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “We’re working on Kings Square this week to complete a permanent reinstatement of the ground following a complex sewer repair earlier in the year. To enable us to do so safely, we’re operating under a road closure.

“At the same time, we’re connecting a commercial building to the mains network on Colliergate. We’ve brought this work forward, in careful planning with the council, so that we don’t need to instate further roadworks in the area in the near future.

“We appreciate that this work is disruptive and thank everyone in the area for their patience.”
