A blue plaque will be unveiled in tribute to the veterinary surgeon and author behind All Creatures Great and Small.

The plaque will honour Alf Wight OBE, better known by his pen name James Herriot, and will be installed at his former home, Rowardennan, in Topcliffe Road, Thirsk.

Rosie Page, his daughter, said: "It is a lovely tribute to our father’s memory to have a Blue Plaque there to recognise his family home."

Mr Wight, who inspired millions with his stories, lived at Rowardennan for more than 25 years and wrote many of his books in the living room.

The unveiling will take place on Thursday, October 8, at 3pm.

The property was bought by Brian and Linda Halliday in 2024 and became part of a James Herriot walking tour in 2025.

Mr Wight’s stories led to the creation of the globally popular television series All Creatures Great and Small.
