A new Young Archaeologists Club has launched in York.

The club will give children aged eight to 15 the chance to handle real artefacts and explore archaeology through hands-on activities.

It will run on the second Saturday of each month from 10.30am to 12.30pm at 2nd St Thomas's Scouts.

Fiona Hyde, one of the club’s founders, said: "York is not only home to the Council of British Archaeology and two of the country’s top archaeological attractions – JORVIK Viking Centre and DIG – but also has an incredibly rich archaeological heritage, with finds dating back nearly 10,000 years to the Mesolithic Period, right through the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking periods to the Victorian period."

The club has been set up by four friends and colleagues who have all worked at York Archaeology.

Membership costs £10, with a £5 fee per session.

Members also receive a YAC card, which offers discounts at museums and heritage sites across the UK.
