MOTORISTS are being urged to shop around for fuel as diesel prices reach record highs.

The Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) issued the warning after the RAC reported that diesel has climbed to 199.18p per litre, surpassing the previous record of 199.09p in June 2022. Petrol prices are also high, averaging 174.13p per litre.

Anna Sharkey, head of money and pensions policy and propositions at MaPS, said: "Diesel prices hitting £2 a litre in some areas is a blow for households already under sustained financial pressure.

"We know that for many drivers cutting back is simply not an option, so it is vital people shop round for the cheapest fuel in their area, as even small savings can make a big difference."

A MaPS survey in June found that 17 per cent of drivers are reducing vehicle use or cutting household expenses to afford fuel, while two per cent said fuel is simply unaffordable.

The MoneyHelper petrol price finder tool, which uses data from the Government’s fuel finder service, helps drivers find the cheapest fuel in their area.

It also offers additional guidance on budgeting, bills, and benefits to help households manage rising costs.
