A new chief executive has taken up one of the most senior countryside roles in the region, with responsibility for helping shape the future of the Yorkshire Dales.

James Blake officially began his new position as chief executive with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority on Monday, September 28.

He arrives from YHA (England & Wales), where he served as chief executive since 2017, leading the charity through significant change and championing wider access to nature for young people and families.

Mr Blake said: "I am delighted to be starting work at the authority and to have the opportunity to work alongside the people who care so passionately about this special place.

"My immediate priority is to listen and build a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the Dales.

"Over the coming weeks I want to spend as much time as possible meeting colleagues, partners, farmers, local communities and volunteers, understanding their perspectives and learning more about the work already underway across the national park."

As he settles into the role, Mr Blake will spend his first weeks meeting staff, members, farmers, land managers, partner organisations and communities throughout the Dales.

He said he is "excited by the opportunity" to help deliver the National Park Management Plan, the recently adopted Local Plan and the authority’s wider work in areas such as nature, climate, access, heritage and rural communities.

Derek Twine, chairman of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, said: "It’s great to welcome James to the authority.

"His experience, leadership and commitment to partnership working will be a tremendous asset as we continue working with communities and partners to conserve and enhance this special landscape."

Mr Twine also paid tribute to the outgoing acting chief executive.

He said: "I would also like to place on record my sincere thanks to Gary Smith for the excellent job he’s done as acting chief executive over the past six months, and to the wider senior leadership team whose commitment, professionalism and support have helped ensure a smooth and successful transition."
