A North Yorkshire regimental museum is set to shine a light on the often-overlooked role played by Indian soldiers during one of the First World War's most famous campaigns.

The Green Howards Museum in Richmond will host a public talk on Saturday, October 16, focusing on the contributions of Indian troops during the Gallipoli campaign of 1915.

John Wilson, former education officer at the Gallipoli Association, will deliver the presentation.

A spokesman for the museum said: "Many think they know about the Gallipoli campaign and that it was mostly a British, Australian and New Zealand affair.

"Men from other commonwealth nations were there including men of the 14th Sikh regiment who, at the 3rd battle of Krithia lost 379 officers and men in one day’s fighting on 4 June 1915."

General Sir Ian Hamilton, who commanded the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, wrote: "The history of the Sikhs affords many instances of their value as soldiers, but it may be safely asserted that nothing finer than the grim valour and steady discipline displayed by them on 4th June has ever been done by the soldiers of the Khalsa.

"Their devotion to duty and their splendid loyalty to their orders and to their leaders make a record their nation should look back upon with pride for many generations."

Tickets for the event cost £15 per person and include museum entry, a welcome drink, and the talk.

Advance booking is recommended due to limited seating.

Bookings can be made online through the museum’s website or in person at the museum.
