Healthcare workers from across County Durham swapped clinics for dragon boats this weekend to raise funds for a cancer charity set up in memory of Sir Bobby Robson.

East Durham Medical Group raised £2,359 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation at the Newcastle Dragon Boat Race.

The 17-strong crew included staff from EDMG and partner organisations supporting patients across the region.

The crew included colleagues from County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust’s Musculoskeletal Service, the Vulnerable Adults Wraparound Service and South Durham Health Federation’s Frailty Service.

Joseph Chandy, managing partner of East Durham Medical Group and a member of the dragon boat crew, said: "We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part and of the £2,359 raised so far for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

"This is a charity that means a great deal to people across the North East and aligns closely with our commitment to improving health and wellbeing in our communities.

"What made the event especially meaningful was seeing colleagues from different organisations who support our patients come together for a common cause.

"The relationships, trust, and teamwork built through collaboration are essential to delivering joined-up care, and the Dragon Boat Race was a fantastic reflection of that spirit.

"I would like to thank every participant, sponsor, and donor for their support and generosity."

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation funds cancer treatment, research and patient care across the North East. The late Sir Bobby Robson set it up after his own cancer diagnosis.

EDMG said the charity has a special place in the hearts of many healthcare workers and patients across the region.

Teams raced along the River Tyne between the Tyne Bridge and Millennium Bridge as thousands of spectators cheered them on.

The two-day event, organised by NE1, attracted around 900 participants and raised money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

EDMG thanked everyone who took part, donated or supported the fundraising effort.

The team said the event showed what collaboration can achieve inside and outside the workplace.

A spokesman for East Durham Medical Group said: "The event brought together a team of 17 participants representing not only East Durham Medical Group but also a range of healthcare professionals and partner organisations who work collaboratively to support local patients every day."

Fundraising has reached £2,359, and donations are still being accepted.
