SOME of York's most historic buildings are set to open their doors to the public later this week.

York Unlocked will return this weekend (October 3 and 4) - offering a rare opportunity to explore more than 25 buildings and spaces across the city at no cost.

The volunteer led event is entering its fifth year and has welcomed thousands of visitors since its launch in 2022.

This year's line up includes Bishopthorpe Palace, Heslington Hall, Holgate Windmill, The Golden Fleece, Bedern Hall, Fishergate Postern Tower, Kentmere House Gallery, RAFA House, Merchant Taylors’ Hall, and the York Medical Society among its featured locations.

A spokesperson for York Unlocked said: "This is the weekend we have all been working towards, and we cannot wait to welcome people into some of York’s most remarkable buildings and spaces.

“York Unlocked is about giving people the chance to indulge their curiosity, step through doors they may normally walk past and experience the city in a different way.

"Come and explore, discover, and enjoy York with us this weekend."

Many of the buildings will be open to the public on a drop-in basis, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace, however, some locations require free pre-booked tickets.

Organisers have reminded attendees to only travel to these sites if they already have a valid booking for the correct timeslot.

Visitors are also being encouraged to check the York Unlocked website for full details of opening days, times, accessibility information, and booking requirements, as these vary between venues.

A spokesperson added: "Whether you have planned a full weekend, want to explore a particular part of the city, or simply have a couple of hours to spare, there is plenty to discover."
