A highly regarded Whitby Inn and B&B has scored one star for food hygiene, meaning major improvement necessary.
The White House Hotel and Inn on Upgang Lane, overlooking Whitby Golf Course, received the rating from North Yorkshire Council following a visit on August 13.
For hygienic food handling, inspectors judged standards were generally satisfactory.
But for the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and the building, it was a matter of major improvement necessary.

For the management of food safety, it was also a matter of major improvement necessary.
A spokesperson for the hotel said: “We were incredibly disappointed in the outcome of our inspection, as we take food hygiene and the safety and wellbeing of our guests extremely seriously.
“The inspection highlighted a damaged step in our cellar, therefore, leaving a small gap in the door, two missing wall tiles, damaged kitchen flooring and kitchen temperatures (Our inspection just happened to be on the hottest day of the year here in Whitby!).
“We have since taken steps to address these matters, including repairs to the flooring and step, replacing the wall tiles and put the appropriate measures in place to monitor and manage the Kitchen temperature.”
The statement continued: “The inspector did re visit us the following week and was impressed with the changes we had already made since his inspection and was reassured all repairs were booked in.
“Importantly, there was no evidence that any guest had been made ill as a result of these findings, we have nevertheless treated the findings seriously!
The statement added: “We will continue to work on maintaining the standards North Yorkshire Council expect of us and look forward to a further inspection in a few months’ time. Our aim is to demonstrate that the necessary improvements have been made and to restore our previous rating.”
The three-star 11-bed White House Inn promises breathtaking views and offers a seasonal menu.
