TEMPORARY traffic lights are being trialled in a York village to tackle delays caused by a lane closure on a major road nearby.
As reported by The Press, the northbound lane of Monks Cross Link connecting the Monks Cross shopping area with the York Outer Ring Road is closed for infrastructure work until November 6.
Motorists reported spending up to 30 minutes in queues in the area close to key shopping and leisure parks in the city, made more acute on matchdays at the nearby LNER Community Stadium.
City of York Council said traffic congestion through Huntington "became an issue as drivers sought to join the outer ring road" through the village, instead of taking a recommended diversion of just over four kilometres along the A1036 Malton Road.
The infrastructure work on Monks Cross Link is part of the construction of 970 new houses in the area and the closure is expected to remain in place continuously until November 6.
Developer Redrow said the northbound lane closure is in place for works associated with Monks Cross Garden Village.
The temporary lights in Huntington were put in place at the New Lane-North Moor Road junction.
A City of York Council spokesperson said: "Traffic congestion through Huntington became an issue as drivers sought to join the outer ring road through Huntington, instead of going around it via the recommended diversion of Malton Road, Hopgrove roundabout and onto the A1237.
"We have worked with the developer, they have trialled temporary traffic lights at the New Lane-North Moor Road junction in Huntington to manage that congestion.
"We will be reviewing the trial today (Monday, September 28) to determine whether to extend it."
