The accreditation confirms that Hopetown Darlington meets nationally agreed standards for management and governance, protecting its collections for future generations. Its nationally significant railway collection contains more than 30,000 objects and records.
Emmie Kell, director of museums and cultural property at Arts Council England, said: "We’re delighted that Hopetown Darlington has gained accreditation.
"This means that their collections will be looked after and maintained, offering inspiration, enjoyment and learning for the local community and visitors now and in the future."
The accreditation follows a detailed assessment and recognises the attraction’s progress since opening.
Hopetown celebrates Darlington’s pivotal railway role through exhibitions, collections, a learning programme and events.
Mike Crawshaw, head of heritage and culture at Darlington Council, said: "Museum Accreditation is an important milestone for Hopetown Darlington as we continue to establish the attraction as a must-visit national destination.
"The railway heritage collection is an important feature of the visitor experience, telling the story of Darlington's world-changing role in railway history and providing a unique connection to the past.
"This recognition reflects the quality of the collection, and we'd encourage anyone who hasn't yet visited Hopetown to come and discover everything the site has to offer."
Accreditation opens the door to new funding, touring exhibitions and professional advice and support.
It also reassures donors and sponsors supporting the museum’s mission to preserve heritage and inspire future generations.
