Just a few miles from Darlington, the tiny village of Eppleby feels like a step back in time.

Tucked among rolling fields, Eppleby in North Yorkshire is little-known but hard to forget once discovered.

Its picture-postcard green, centuries of history and peaceful rural setting offer an escape from modern life.

Less than ten miles from Darlington and close to the County Durham border, the village is framed by winding lanes, mature trees and stone-built homes.

The first thing visitors notice is the village green, a tranquil centrepiece surrounded by traditional cottages and gardens bursting with colour during the warmer months.

It feels lifted from a storybook, with birdsong instead of traffic and life moving at a gentler pace.

But behind its quiet appearance lies a history stretching back nearly 1,000 years. The name Eppleby is thought to come from the Old Norse ‘epliby’, meaning “settlement where apples are grown”, a reminder of Scandinavian influence across northern England.

The village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, making it one of the many settlements whose existence was documented shortly after the Norman Conquest.

More than nine centuries later, Eppleby remains a thriving community with much of its historic character intact.

That history is woven into the landscape, from historic farmhouses and listed buildings to landmarks linked to generations who lived and worked here.

There are also traces of the railway age.

The former Forcett branch line, which once connected local communities to the wider rail network, passed through the area.

The trains are long gone, but keen-eyed visitors can still spot traces of the route in the countryside.

For walkers and explorers, Eppleby’s appeal lies as much in what it lacks as in what it offers.

There are no crowds, no packed car parks and no queues.

Instead, visitors get quiet lanes, sweeping farmland views and a rare sense of solitude.

A traditional pub, village hall and tea room give residents and visitors a warm welcome, making Eppleby more than a pretty place to look at.

What makes Eppleby particularly special is that it still feels undiscovered.
