North Yorkshire abbey to host antiques and valuation event

A Yorkshire abbey is set to host a day celebrating antiques and the legacy of a famed furniture maker.

Ampleforth Abbey will welcome visitors for a valuation day and a programme of events dedicated to Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson on October 21, in partnership with Tennants Auctioneers.

Visitors are invited to bring antiques and collectables for free, no-obligation auction valuations between 11am and 3pm at the abbey’s Visitor Centre.

A spokesman for Tennants Auctioneers said: "A team of specialists will on hand to offer free, no obligation auction valuations for all your antiques and collectables, including Mouseman and Yorkshire Critters, Jewellery, Glass and Ceramics, Clocks and Watches, and Antiques and Collectables.

"For a free auction estimate, bring your items between 11am and 3pm (no appointment required) and Tennants’ friendly and knowledgeable specialists will be happy to provide any information or advice you need."

The day will also celebrate the life and work of Robert Thompson, the renowned Yorkshire craftsman known for his 'Mouseman' furniture.

Ampleforth Abbey and College was the most significant commission for the iconic Yorkshire craftsman.

The spokesman said: "As part of the valuation day, Tennants’ Mouseman Specialist Diane Sinnott will be giving a talk on the evolution of the work of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thomspon, his links with Ampleforth and his iconic Monk’s Chair."

Visitors will also have the chance to join a guided Mouseman tour of the Abbey Church and Ampleforth College Library.

A spokesman said: "There are limited tickets available for the talk and tour, and early booking is advised."

The Mouseman talk begins at 9.45am and costs £15, including refreshments.

The Mouseman tour starts at 3pm and tickets are priced at £10.

Ampleforth Abbey is located in the Hambleton Hills, near the North York Moors, just a few miles from Thompson’s home in Kilburn.
