A POPULAR retailer in York city centre has been emptied ahead of a major renovation.

HMV in Coney Street has been emptied, with bosses saying it will return with a new look late next month.

The shop has been part of York’s high street since 1990 and survived several closure threats, including ‘closing soon’ signs in its windows in March 2019.

As reported by The Press in August, signs in the windows of the media retailer stated that the shop will be closed from Monday, August 31 until late October.

A HMV spokesperson told The Press at the time: “HMV is excited to elevate the shopping experience at its York shop, temporarily closing to build a reimagined space designed to enhance the way customers discover more of what they love.

“While we are currently unable to share any further details, we will share more information nearer the time of reopening."

The Coney Street revamp comes ahead of the wider Coney Street Riverside project, with work beginning to improve retail space, add upper-floor accommodation and create new hospitality venues.

Plans for the wider project include creating a new public space called St Martin’s Yard, linking Coney Street to the riverfront.

Across the road, cosmetics retailer Space NK announced its return to the city and opened a new shop last Friday (September 25).
