A kind-hearted stranger who stopped to help a pregnant woman after she fell in a supermarket car park has been praised by police.

Emergency services were called to Lidl in Barnard Castle shortly before 4pm on Friday (September 25) following reports a pregnant woman had fallen onto her stomach in the car park.

Durham Police stayed with the woman while awaiting paramedics.

With conditions described as windy and cooler than normal, a member of the public stepped in to give the woman a blanket from his car to keep her warm.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who stopped to offer support, assistance, and kind words. It was truly heart-warming to see so many members of the public willing to help someone in need.

“A very special thank you goes to the gentleman who selflessly gave up his blanket. Your compassion and generosity made a real difference during what was undoubtedly a worrying time.”

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called just before 4pm on Friday, September 25 to reports of a pregnant woman who had fallen outside Lidl in Barnard Castle.
