Google celebrates 28th birthday with interactive Doodle featuring nostalgic logo

Google is marking its 28th birthday today (September 27) with a Doodle featuring a nostalgic logo from the company's early days.

Launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google began as a project to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful".

The search engine was originally called Backrub before being renamed Google, a play on the mathematical term "googol," which means 1 followed by 100 zeros.

Now, Google is a global brand with hundreds of products used by billions of people worldwide.

Google's 28th birthday Doodle

To celebrate its 28th birthday, Google has released a commemorative Doodle on Sunday (September 27).

The company said: "As we celebrate Google's birthday today, we remember our humble beginnings as a research project in a garage – proof that breakthrough moments can start in ordinary places.

"The Doodle artwork features Google’s first-ever logo (created in 1998).

"Let this vintage logo transport you back to the '90s and teleport into the future by checking out Google’s newest AI innovation."

The interactive Doodle allows users to click through to a page where they can explore past Doodles from their own birthday.

The history behind Google's Doodles

Google’s very first Doodle appeared in 1998 as a quick way for founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin to let users know they were out of the office attending Burning Man.

Since then, Doodles have become a regular feature, celebrating events, people, and cultures around the world.

In 2000, Google launched its first international Doodle to mark Bastille Day in France.

That same year, it published its first animated Doodle for Halloween.

More recently, Doodles have included interactive games, full videos, VR experiences, and AI-powered content.

Google said: "The first Doodle was a simple out-of-office message, but in the past 25 years Doodles have grown into a global phenomenon celebrating heroes, events, culture, places and so much more."
