Citizens Advice urges County Durham residents to make a will this October

Citizens Advice is urging people across County Durham to make a valid will, warning that families can face problems when someone dies without one.

The charity is running the campaign throughout October to highlight the importance of making and updating a will.

Edward Pickering, chief executive of Citizens Advice County Durham, said: "Every adult should have a Will, regardless of their age, income or wealth – it's the only way of making sure your wishes are met after you're gone.

"Too many people put it off because they think it is complicated or expensive, or that they have nothing to leave.

"The reality is that you can often write a straightforward will yourself. For more complex situations, a solicitor can tell you the cost upfront.

"Taking control now gives you and your family peace of mind later."

The campaign tackles myths such as “I have nothing to leave”, “I don’t know where to start” and “It’s too expensive”.

Without a valid will, an estate is divided under the rules of intestacy, Citizens Advice warns.

That can leave unmarried partners with no automatic inheritance and force families through stressful legal processes at an already difficult time.
