Drivers in North Yorkshire face a diversion of almost 33 miles, taking around an hour, when a remote Yorkshire Dales road closes for two days.

The road between Horsehouse and Little Hunter Sleets in Coverdale is due to close from Thursday, October 1, until Friday, October 2.

The closure is being put in place while Openreach replaces an existing telegraph pole.

Roadworks information published on the one.network platform shows a signed diversion of 52.59km, equivalent to around 32.7 miles.

The alternative route is estimated to take drivers about an hour to complete.

The affected road runs from Horsehouse towards Little Hunter Sleets through Coverdale, with the limited number of alternative roads in the rural area resulting in a substantial diversion.

According to the one.network diversion information, motorists will initially be directed along Cam Gill Road before heading towards Howden Bank.

The route then winds through a series of rural roads towards Hollins and Gale Bank.

Drivers continue along Holl Gate and Main Street before joining Mesnes Lane.

The diversion then heads towards Ellers Lane and Bishopdale Lane, taking motorists away from Coverdale and into neighbouring Bishopdale.

Drivers follow Street Head Bank before rejoining Bishopdale Lane for almost 5km.

The route then reaches Kidstones Bank before continuing along Causeway and Blackstones Lane.

Motorists are subsequently directed along Park Lane and Buckden Wood Lane before eventually heading back towards Cam Gill Road.

In total, one.network gives the signed diversion as 52.59km, or approximately 32.7 miles, and estimates that it will take around an hour.

The lengthy route reflects the limited road network linking the neighbouring dales, where even relatively short closures can leave motorists having to travel considerable distances to reach the other side.

Horsehouse is a small village in Coverdale in the Yorkshire Dales, around six miles south-west of Middleham and approximately 8.5 miles from Leyburn.

The River Cover runs close to the village, which is surrounded by the hills and moorland of the Yorkshire Dales.

A North Yorkshire Council traffic notice says vehicles will be prohibited from using the Horsehouse to Little Hunter Sleets road while the work takes place.

The restriction is due to run from October 1 to October 2, with access to premises exempt from the closure.

The council says traffic signs will be placed to indicate the restriction and a local alternative route will be signed where necessary.

One.network lists Openreach as responsible for the work, which involves replacing an existing BT telegraph pole.

Drivers using the area during the two-day closure should follow the signed diversion rather than attempting to use unsuitable alternative rural roads.
