York Castle Museum is unveiling a new Halloween experience this half-term, inspired by real prison escapes and historic traditions.

York Castle Museum will turn its Georgian prison cells into an adventure where visitors can uncover daring escapes and secret plots from York's criminal past.

The escape activity will have two versions: one for younger children and another for older teenagers and adults.

A spokesperson for York Castle Museum said: "Armed with the jailer's keys, uncover clues hidden inside the cells, beneath the flagstones and within the prison walls to piece together stories of daring escapes and secret plots."

The museum will also recreate Victorian Halloween traditions on its Kirkgate street, including “guising”, an early form of trick-or-treating.

In the 19th century, people went door to door in disguise, performing songs, poems or jokes for fruit, nuts or money.

History Riot will return with Nut-Crack Night, a family-friendly storytelling show inspired by Halloween and guising traditions in Victorian Yorkshire.

October half-term activities run from Saturday, October 24, to Sunday, November 1, and are included in general admission.
