'I can foresee trouble ahead': Post Office closures spark Christmas warning

Former Post Office on Lendal - our letter writer says York people miss it now especially given closures of other city centre post offices

York Post Office closures spark Christmas queue fears

FIRST the Micklegate Post Office closed briefly [it has now reopened] then it was announced the main Post Office in Coney Street, in the former WH Smith's, is to shut in October.

Soon, city centre customers will be left with only the small, friendly, two-counter Colliergate Post Office.

Just how on earth are they going to cope – especially with Christmas coming up?

I can foresee trouble ahead with long queues of shivering customers waiting in the inclement winter weather to post their parcels and cards in Colliergate, mingling with busy shoppers trying to negotiate the narrow footpath.

How we Yorkies miss the old, purpose-built, spacious General Post Office in Lendal.

'Yes' – the triple lock should stay

THE triple lock is a payback of money deducted from every worker who like myself paid national insurance for 50 years – it is not a benefit as some will say.

The payment is way below what the government say is a basic living wage and what it pays people who can't or won't work.

Not every pensioner has savings or a private pension to top up their government pension.

How many people will never get to pension age and what happens to all their contributions, which nobody will ever fully get back?

How many billions or even trillions of pounds has the government had from us since National Insurance first started?

So the answer is a definite 'yes' – the triple lock should stay.

S Robinson,

York

  • MP 'working to restore Post Office services’ after York's main branch closes
  • 'I worked for 50 years – now pensioners are told we're the problem'
  • Triple lock for pensioners? Too right – they’ve earned every penny
