A VICTORIAN home linked to one of York's most historic figures many people will recognise is now on the market.

Moyola House, a historic home located just off Layerthorpe in Hawthorn Grove (and next to the former Londons Toy Shop), is currently up for sale for £725,000.

The 1870s property is believed to have originally been built for the brother of philanthropist and businessman Joseph Rowntree, and was designed by the architect Richard Hey Sharp.

It has gone through several transformations over the years, including a stint as a private school in the early 20th century, before returning to a private residence and being refurbished by current owners to a modern standard.

This includes the addition of double glazing, updated heating, electrics, flooring and insulation, as well as a roof renovation.

Upon entering the house, the period details have been retained, with the original staircase, decorative plasterwork, and a double-height stained glass window.

The ground floor features a spacious drawing room with a unique curved semicircle wall, a reading room, and a snug or family room.

The newly fitted kitchen and dining room "provides a bright and sociable heart to the home" with soft-coloured cabinetry, pale work surfaces and a curved worktop.

The dining area, which has a wide window and window seat, offers ample room for a family dining table.

On the first floor, the main bedroom is described as a "particularly generous and restful room", with plenty of space for a large bed, freestanding furniture, a comfortable seating area, and an en-suite bathroom.

The second bedroom on this floor is another generous double room, and there's also a family bathroom with a freestanding claw-foot bath and a separate shower room.

The second floor comprises two further large bedrooms and a smaller bedroom that was previously used as a study - something the estate agent says "becomes particularly useful for families with older children, guests or anyone who regularly works from home."

Outside, there's a private sunny terrace with dining, seating, and BBQ areas, as well as parking space for up to two cars.

Estate Agent Holly Price, who is marketing the property, said she was ' incredibly proud to be bringing Moyola House to the market for the first time in over 20 years'.

She said: “ I’ve always loved properties that have a story to tell, and this is certainly one of them.

"Its rich history, links to the Rowntree family and the fact that it has played such a recognisable part in Heworth for generations make it a really special home to represent.

There’s something lovely about being able to share the story behind a house as well as the property itself, particularly when it’s one that so many local people will recognise.

"The current owners have clearly cared deeply about Moyola House and its history, while creating a beautiful family home for modern life. It’s a real privilege for us at Price Estate Agents to be trusted with the next chapter in its story.”

A self-contained two-bedroom apartment - which is located in the basement of the property - is also for sale separately and can potentially be included with the purchase at an agreed additional price.
