A driver who was seen weaving through traffic and accelerating "aggressively" claimed he was trying to fix a problem with his car, according to police.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police's Bradford City neighbourhood policing team said they spotted a Volkswagen driving erratically on Senior Way in the city centre.

After stopping the vehicle, the driver told officers he was attempting to "regenerate the diesel particulate filter" on the car.

A diesel particulate filter, or DPF, is part of a vehicle's exhaust system that is designed to remove soot and other pollutants.

Regeneration is the process of clearing the build-up of soot inside the filter.

However, police said the main road was "not the place or the time for that".

What police said

In a post on the Operation Steerside facebook page, officers said: "Whilst patrolling we spotted this Volkswagen on Senior Way weaving in & out of traffic and aggressively accelerating.

"On stopping it, the driver tried to explain that he was simply trying to regenerate the diesel particulate filter.

"Not the place or the time for that, sadly."

The vehicle was seized under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act and the driver was reported.
