A BLUE plaque has been unveiled in honour of a policeman-turned-crime writer.

It commemorates Maurice Procter at the former Halifax Borough Police Headquarters on Harrison Road in Halifax.

The ceremony took place on Monday, September 21, and was attended by family members, crime writers, and representatives from Calderdale Libraries.

Chief Superintendent Sareth Humpage, Divisional Officer of Calderdale Division, West Yorkshire Police, was delighted to be invited to unveil the plaque, providing a direct connection with the police service in which Procter began his working life.

Maurice Procter served with the Halifax Borough Police from 1927 to 1946 before launching a successful career as a crime novelist.

He went on to write 26 novels, including Hell Is a City, which was later adapted into a film.

Mandy Hurd, secretary of Halifax Civic Trust, said: "I hope the plaque will encourage more people in Halifax to discover Maurice Procter and his books."
