A shawarma takeaway has been hit with a string of hygiene breaches in addition to an earlier enforcement notice back in 2023.

King Shawarma, based in the Laisterdyke/Thornbury area, received a one-star food hygiene rating after an inspection on July 24, 2026.

At the site on Leeds Road, inspectors found multiple breaches, including a lack of a designated hand basin in the kitchen, no soap or hand-drying facilities at the basin in the restaurant side, and marinated lamb stored at 14.4°C - well above safe chilled temperatures.

Cooked rice was left at room temperature, and there was no monitoring of hot-held food.

Raw lamb and chicken were stored next to ready-to-eat foods, and a sanitiser bottle was left unlabelled, raising concerns about proper disinfection.

Additional findings included mouldy chopping boards, dirty storage containers, and evidence of flies.

A rusty, peeling chest-freezer was being used as a worktop, and other structural issues included a damaged tap, dirty refrigerator seals, and grease contamination outside the bin storage area.

Refuse had also accumulated at the rear of the premises.

Management failings were noted, such as the absence of a food safety management system, no fridge or freezer records, and no evidence of staff training or food traceability documentation.

The hob to cook rice on was dirty, as was the blender.

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: "The premises was inspected in July and the owners were issued two improvement notices to install a washbasin and repair a faulty sink tap.

"As of our latest inspection on September 21, these have been complied with and our investigation has concluded.

"The hygiene rating will stay the same until an authorised officer completes a full inspection, which is due to take place next July.

"The owners can apply to have this done sooner should they wish to do so."

The hygiene inspectors noted a poor history of compliance, with some issues repeated from previous inspections.

What's more, an enforcement notice had already been issued at site of the takeaway prior to this inspection back in 16 November 2023.

Specifically, the notice addressed unauthorised structures including a single-storey glazed building, decking, steps, a freestanding shelter, and an attached canopy.

It said these developments harmed the appearance of the site and the surrounding street scene and noted the required removal of the structures within two months of it taking effect on December 28, 2023.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: "The Enforcement Notice relates to two structures that have been constructed without proper planning permission.

"The requirements of the enforcement notice, which are to demolish said structures, remain outstanding and as a result the landowners remain at risk of further legal action being taken."

The T&A attempted to contact King Shawarma but had no response, with the business listed as permanently closed online.
