Sir Kevin Sinfield will receive a moving send-off when dozens of York schoolchildren gather to sing for him as he sets off on the third day of his ultra-marathon fundraising challenge.
Around 50 pupils from Archbishop of York's Church of England Junior School choir will perform at Bishopthorpe Palace on Tuesday, September 29, as Sir Kevin begins day three of his final 7 in 7 challenge.
The junior school choir will sing as the rugby league legend and his team set off on the latest leg of the challenge, which raises funds and awareness for motor neurone disease (MND).
Kerry Davies, executive headteacher, said: "It is a real privilege for our choir, Junior and Infant children, and the whole school community to come together to see Sir Kevin Sinfield and his team off as they begin Day 3 of this incredible challenge.
"Sir Kevin’s determination, resilience and selflessness are truly inspirational, and it is wonderful to see our children playing their part in supporting him and raising awareness for such an important cause.
"It is a moment they will remember and one we are incredibly proud to be part of."
Sir Kevin, a patron of the MND Association, has raised millions for MND causes through his high-profile fundraising efforts since 2020, when his former Leeds Rhinos teammate and close friend Rob Burrow CBE was diagnosed with the disease.
Burrow, one of rugby league's most celebrated players, died in June 2024 aged 41 after a widely publicised battle with MND.
Since his diagnosis, Sir Kevin has become one of the sport's leading fundraisers, completing a series of endurance challenges that have captured national attention. His efforts have helped fund MND research, care and support services, while also increasing public awareness of the condition.
He was awarded a knighthood in the 2024 New Year Honours in recognition of his services to motor neurone disease awareness and charitable fundraising.
His latest challenge, 7 in 7: The Grand Finale, involves running an ultra-marathon every day for seven days from September 28.
The route will take him across the north of England and to the home grounds of all 12 English Betfred Super League clubs.
Sir Kevin and his team have raised more than £11 million for MND charities through their fundraising efforts.
The send-off at Bishopthorpe Palace will give pupils the chance to support Sir Kevin and raise awareness of MND.
The Archbishop of York's Church of England Junior School and Bishopthorpe Infant School are both part of the Yorkshire Learning Trust.
Sir Kevin Sinfield and his team will leave Bishopthorpe Palace on Tuesday morning, September 29, as the choir performs.
