ALLERSTON
Treasure hunt - Churches Together in Allerston are organising a treasure hunt around the village on Saturday, August 29. The event will run between 1-30 and 5pm. Collect a question sheet from the Methodist Chapel from 1-30pm. Cost £2 per person or £5 for a team of three or four people. Teas will be available at the Chapel throughout the event. The winner will be drawn from all the correct entries shortly after 5pm. Come and explore our lovely village or just come along for tea/coffee and cake. Proceeds for church and chapel building funds.
Bransdale
Church Teas 2026 - Future Teas Days will be on Saturday, August 29, and Saturday, September 19. All start from 11am and finish at 4pm. The teas are held in the churchyard at Cockayne, offering views of the surrounding dale and moors. There is a selection of homemade savouries and cakes. In case of poor weather, the teas can be enjoyed inside the church. The churchyard has handrails along the paths, and there is an eco-toilet on the premises. All donations go towards the upkeep and electricity bills of the church.

Festival - Burythorpe Village Charity Scarecrow Festival - Saturday, September 19 11-4pm. Come and visit the lovely village of Burythorpe, for their inaugural Scarecrow Festival this September - a great day out for all the family. Spot and identify the scarecrows around the village, vote for your favourites and win a fun prize for the most correctly guessed. There will be cake and refreshments for sale, and parking is included on the playing field. It’s £5 for parking, a trail map and an answer sheet, and all proceeds go towards the charity renovating the children’s play area in the village.

Farndale Show - The show itself takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31. Do come along; it is a great day out for the whole family.
Dominoes - The next Farndale Domino Drive will take place at 7pm on Friday, August 28, in the Village Hall, Low Mill. This is a great social evening, and the whole family is welcome.
Flower Display - St Mary’s Church will have a flower display on Farndale Show day so don’t forget, visit the church which is Adjacent to the show field.
2027 Farndale Calendar - The new Farndale Calendar featuring photographs by local photographers and sold in aid of Farndale Village Hall will be launched at the Farndale Show. Don’t forget to visit the stall located between the two main marquees and pick yours up.
General Knowledge Quiz - Mick and Rachel’s last ever quiz will be held in the Feversham Arms Inn, Farndale on Friday, September 11.Teams of four, £5 per person including free supper. All proceeds from entry fees and raffle in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

Open Show - This year is Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society’s 45th show. Held in the town’s memorial hall on August Bank Holiday Sunday, August 30. Schedules are available from the local shops or ring Maureen Rolph on 07732 271749. Entries close the morning of the show at 10.15am, and the show opens to the public from 1pm.
Garden Party - You are warmly invited to a garden party with a difference. Come - bring - eat - take and donate. No set price. So please do come along and all proceeds for St Catherine’s Hospice. There will be various stalls and in the beautiful garden enjoy homemade scones and biscuits served with tea/coffee. Come along to Westlands, West Lund Lane on Saturday, September 5, from 1.30pm. Every one is most welcome. Bring a friend along.
Bowling Club - Kirkbymoorside Bowling Club floodlit Open Triples is due to be held on Sunday, September 13, at 12 noon. The competition is open to spectators. A buffet will be served all day. Bridge Club - There was a tie for first place at Malton Bridge Club on Wednesday, Michael Krause and David Malloch sharing the honours with Tricia Pearce and Rupert Gillingham. On Thursday afternoon Richard Hilton and John Bramall led the North-South field ahead of Margaret Fletcher and Julia Shanks, while Tony and Bo Simpson had the top East-West score, with Peter Drabble and Peter Healey in second place.

Derwent Diggers - There was no meeting during August for the Diggers. The next meeting is on September 7, when SeaGrown of Scarborough will give a talk and there will be items for sale. SeaGrown restores the Ocean’s health via seaweed cultivation off the Yorkshire coast. If this interests you please come along. £3 for members and £4 for visitors at the Trinity Methodist Chapel Norton at 7.30. All welcome.
Library - Norton Hive Library and Community Hub today, from 10am to 12 noon. Children can enjoy stories, songs, and interaction with PC Gill, bringing a morning of fun and imagination.
The library also offers several regular activities. These include a ‘weigh and play’ session for babies and toddlers, a facility for checking blood pressure, and a Wool Spinners group meeting on the last Tuesday of every month from 10am to 12 noon.
The Tuesday Art Group for adults meets during term time from 1pm to 3pm.
On Wednesday mornings, the library provides a ‘Find my Past’ session from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
Thursday mornings feature a ‘Knit and Natter’ session from 10.30am to 12 noon and a story time session for little children from 10.30am to 11.30am.
The library also hosts a ‘Thursday Togetherness/Brain Cafe’ from 1pm to 3pm, offering free refreshments and various activities.
The last Saturday of every month is dedicated to a children’s craft morning from 10.30am to 12 noon, costing £1. Booking is essential for this event.

Show - Rillington and District Horticultural and Industrial Society’s 101st Annual Show will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday, October 17. The subjects for the photography classes are Autumn Colours, Open Class (any subject), Weather, and a photograph (any subject) accompanied by an amusing caption. Due to a shortage of committee members, the number of classes in the schedule has had to be reduced this year.
Events - The Fleece Inn is hosting a series of events. Quiz night on August 28 at 8.30pm. A Killer Pool Night is planned for August 21 from 8.30pm. The prize bingo fundraiser for Diabetes UK will occur on September 1. More information: Jennie, 01944 758464.

Coffee morning - Scagglethorpe village hall will be holding a coffee morning, Bank Holiday Monday, August 31, 10.30am. Admission free. With cake stall, raffle, and bric-a-brac stall to raise funds for the village hall.

Local History Society - The next year of the Sherburn Local History Society begins with the meeting at Sherburn Village Hall YO17 8PG on Monday, September 7, at 7pm. The first part of the meeting will be the AGM at which the various working group officers’ reports will be presented and the election/re-election of the working group officers for the year ahead will take place. As always all are welcome to attend and to have a say whilst attending members will also take part in the election process.
The AGM will be followed by previously unseen photographs from the Marston Archive and there will also be a table display from the John Clarke Archive. Methodist News - It was good to welcome Rev Trevor Haigh and his wife Jenny to Sherburn Chapel to lead our Worship. The Bible Readings were from 2Kings 6:8-23; Acts 17:15-34. Rev Trevor spoke of how we must not harden our hearts when God speaks to us but to listen and obey. After the service we all enjoyed a lovely light lunch in the Hall as we shared fellowship together. Next Sunday, August 30, we are delighted to welcome our Minister Rev Janet Rossall to lead the Holy Communion Service. Worship music and videos from 10.15am leading into the service at 10.30am. There will be light refreshments at the close. We do hope that you will be able to join us.

Recital - Welburn PCC is hosting an organ recital in Welburn church. The organ, a rare ‘Father’ Willis installed in 1860, has just undergone extensive renovation at Peter Wood & Son in Harrogate and we are thrilled that the celebrated organist and composer Philip Moore will give an organ recital at 7pm on Friday, September 4. Tickets are not required but generous donations towards the upkeep of this very special organ will be greatly appreciated. Light refreshments served afterwards.
