Yorkshire events set to finish in September

From flowerpot sculptures to wildflower picking, summer has brought a flurry of events to Yorkshire.

Yet, with August drawing to a close, many of these seasonal experiences are coming to an end. Here are the best events to catch before summer is over – whether that’s swimming at Ilkley Lido or exploring lavender gardens in Terrington.

Yorkshire Lavender, Terrington

This summer, Yorkshire Lavender has hosted yoga sessions, painting, and silent discos in its flower gardens. The 60-acre farm opens seasonally from April 1 to August 31 and, to celebrate its final week, is offering 20% off all general admissions.

Yorkshire swimmers have a little longer to brave the freezing waters of Ilkley Lido. The unheated outdoor pool opens seasonally, usually closing at the end of September. Peasholm Park Naval Warfare, Scarborough

Since June 27, replica boats have been performing theatrical sea battles on a boating lake in Scarborough. August 27, 29, and 31 are the final chances to see it live – complete with smoke bombs and pyrotechnics.

Located near the permanent water jets, this annual event brings deckchairs and sandpits to Sheffield’s Peace Gardens. Catch ‘Sheffield by the Seaside’ before it closes on August 29.

Haxby Flower Meadow, York

Pick-your-own flower farms have been all the rage. Closing on August 31, Haxby Flower Meadows is welcoming visitors to pick the last of its wildflowers this week.

Brick Explorers at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, Harrogate

Between July 18 and September 6, RHS Garden Harlow Carr is running a sculpture trail in its gardens. Each sculpture is crafted from thousands of minuscule bricks, and the family-friendly event is drawing to a close.

The Settle Flowerpot Festival, Settle

From July 11 to September 6, Settle residents decorate the town in artwork made entirely from flowerpots. Previous pieces have included giraffes, Mario and Luigi, and even the Beatles. Walk the trail for free or buy a booklet from Settle Tourist Information Centre for £3.

Lightwater Valley’s Summer Activities, Ripon

Lightwater Valley has hosted a summer of family-friendly activities, from live shows to foam parties. Its summer schedule will finish on September 2.

Scarborough Spa Orchestra, Scarborough

Between July 19 and September 9, Scarborough is celebrating the 114th summer season of its Spa Orchestra. Performances take place in the Grand Hall against a backdrop of the South Bay coastline.

Luke Gerram’s Helios, Wakefield

Located inside the Wakefield Exchange, Helios is a free art exhibition running from June 12 to September 6. The exhibition is centred around a six-metre replica of the sun, with optional space-themed activities for families.
