History of Selby's War Memorial Hospital to be explored in upcoming talk

A hospital built as a living memorial to the fallen of the First World War will be the subject of an upcoming talk.

Selby Civic Society will host its next speaker event on Thursday, September 17, at 7.30pm at Portholme Church in Portholme Road, exploring the history of Selby’s War Memorial Hospital.

The talk, given by historian David Lewis, will cover both the original and current hospital buildings and the wider history of medical provision in the town.

A spokesman for Selby Civic Society said: "Selby Civic Society is looking forward to welcoming David and hearing about this fascinating story of our town."

Mr Lewis has written a new book with the Friends of Selby Hospital, titled A Century of Care, to mark 100 years since the hospital’s foundation stone was laid in 1926.

Copies of the book will be available to buy at the event, and guests are also invited to bring spare change to donate towards hospital improvements, in the spirit of the original fundraising effort.

Admission is £2 for members and £5 for non-members, including light refreshments.
