Trains between York, Selby and Leeds are being disrupted this weekend due to an engineering project.
From Saturday 29 to Monday 31 August, buses will replace trains between Selby and York/Leeds/Micklefield, and between York and Moorthorpe.
The work takes place as Leeds Festival runs from 27-30 August at Bramham Park.
There are two reasons for the disruption.
Firstly, Network Rail is carrying out an £800,000 upgrade of Brotherton Bridge near Knottingley.
And 1.4km of track at Sherburn in Elmet is being renewed “for smoother, more reliable journeys”.
Brotherton Bridge has carried trains across the River Aire since the mid-19th century.
Its superstructure was replaced in 1903 with the steel bridge that still carries trains today.
Karen Duffy, Network Rail operations director, said: “Brotherton Bridge is a key piece of railway infrastructure, and these works will see the renewal of waybeams, which support the rails across structures like bridges, alongside essential repairs and repainting.
“Combining this work with track renewal at Sherburn in Elmet allows us to make the best use of the time the railway is closed and deliver improvements that will support smoother, more reliable journeys.
“We’re sorry to anyone whose journey will be affected and appreciate the understanding of passengers while the work is carried out.”
A spokesperson for Northern and TPE said: “We’re working closely with Network Rail to keep customers moving while these upgrades take place. The work will help improve the reliability of the railway for passengers in the future.
“We thank customers for their patience and encourage anyone travelling over the bank holiday weekend to check before they travel and allow extra time for their journey.”
Travel arrangementsNorthernYork-Hull – Trains will be diverted via an alternative route between Selby and York and will not call at Sherburn in Elmet, Church Fenton or Ulleskelf.
York-Sheffield – Trains will not run.
Hull-Halifax/Leeds – Trains will run between Leeds and Halifax, and between Hull and Selby.
Buses will be provided between:
- Selby and York
- York and Moorthorpe
- Selby and Micklefield
Train services will be available between Moorthorpe and Sheffield.
TransPennine Express
TransPennine Express will operate services between:
- Liverpool Lime Street and Leeds
- Selby and Hull
- Manchester Piccadilly and Wakefield Kirkgate
- Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle
- Manchester Victoria and Scarborough
- Manchester Airport and Redcar Central
Rail replacement buses will operate between:
- Selby and Leeds
For travel between York and Wakefield Kirkgate, passengers can use their tickets on Northern services via Leeds.
