Search the Public Notice Portal LARGE digital signs on a Bradford city centre building would harm a Conservation Area – planners have decided.
Earlier this summer, Jmail Assets Limited applied for advertising consent to install two 1.8 metre by 2.4 metres signs at the corner of 45-47 Godwin Street.
The signs, which would be fitted over two upper floor windows of the property, would “bring a modern counterpoint to a lively high street setting” – the application claimed.
But the plans have now been refused due to concerns by Conservation Officers at Bradford Council.
Why plans have been refused
The building sits within the Bradford City Centre Conservation Area.
Conservation Officer Jon Ackroyd said: “(The building) is faced in good quality ashlar masonry with architectural detailing and makes and important contribution to the conservation area.
“It addresses a junction of five roads and is highly prominent, also in the setting of the Grade II listed Sunwin House.
“The proposed signs would be prominent on the building and in the streetscape. They would appear discordant against the materiality and fenestration of the building. They would conflict with the unity of appearance and the hierarchy of the composition of the building.
“The signs would detract from the appearance of the host property and would cause harm. That harm is not balanced by any public benefit.”
