Exciting plans pitched for Batley’s ‘best shop in the world’

A plea has been made to build five maisonettes above what locals have dubbed “one of the best shops” in the world.

Submitted on August 18, the application by A Dadipatel is pushing Kirklees Council to build five single-room flats above the A & Z Dadipatel Food Store.

Based in Batley, the store sells a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, baked goods, exotic spices, and “everyday” groceries.

In the past, the shop has received rave reviews. Commenting on Google, Ahmed Lo described the spot as the “best in the city” for groceries, while Danny Diez went one step further, declaring A & Z Dadipatel as “the best shop in the world”.

Abdullah Ibn Usman wrote: “A superb range of different ingredients. An extensive and exciting range of different spices, vegetables and fruits. Clean quality butchers. All necessities available here.”

Little has been shared in the initial plans, although the applicant has assured that “all of the building materials are to be purchased locally.” The “small” site will also have additional skylights, though no additional parking has been listed on the application to date.

The comment period for the application ends on Tuesday, September 8, and the council will then move forward with a decision to approve the initial plans based on public feedback.
